Automatic, Quartz, Or Hand Wound Watches: What’s The Difference?

When it comes to watches, there are a few distinct types on the market: automatic, quartz , and hand wound. Each type of watch has its own unique characteristics and features, so it is important to understand the differences between them in order to choose the best one for your needs.

In this blog post, we will examine the differences between automatic, battery powered, and hand wound watches in order to help you decide which type is right for you.

Automatic Watches

An automatic watch does not require any external power sources, such as a battery or winding, to run. Rather, it is powered solely by the natural movements of its wearer. Nonetheless, manual winding is still an option for this type of watch.

This motion causes a weighted rotor to move and turn the mainspring of the watch, which in turn powers the watch movement. This makes an automatic watch a perfect choice for someone looking for an environmentally-friendly, yet stylish and timeless, timepiece.

Quartz Watches

A quartz watch is a watch that runs on a battery as a power source. A quartz watch usually features a quartz crystal that creates a pulse of electric current, which in turn runs the hands of the watch. They are incredibly accurate and typically require very little maintenance.

They are great for everyday use, providing a reliable timepiece that can be picked up after periods of inactivity without the need to wind or set the watch.  It is recommended that quartz watches are serviced every 5 years by the major brands.

Hand-Wound Watches

A hand-wound watch is a type of mechanical watch that requires winding by hand in order to operate. Unlike other types of watches, these types of watches don’t contain a self-winding or automatic movement that charges with motion, and thus, require manual winding.

Manual winding typically involves turning the crown of the watch multiple times each day in order to maintain the power and accuracy of the timepiece. If you’re looking for a timepiece with great style and timeless appeal, then a hand-wound watch is certainly a great choice.

At Luxury Watch Repairs we can carry out a battery replacement & pressure testing (where applicable) while you wait at our service centre, usually within 20 minutes, though we do recommend leaving the watch with us for 24 hours to allow us to carry out sufficient time-keeping and battery consumption tests.
