Spotlight on the Rolex Submariner: The Ultimate Diving Watch

The Rolex Submariner, originally introduced in the mid 1950s, is one of the most iconic and influential diving watches in horological history, and arguably the most popular of its kind. Here’s why.

What’s so special about the Submariner?

At its launch, the Submariner was waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) – something that was unheard of at the time. Fast forward to modern times, and these capabilities have been increased to an impressive 300 metres (1,000 feet).

Exceptional features aside, the Submariner is renowned for its robust construction and pleasing design. It was very aesthetically similar to the Turn-O-Graph, but eventually won out as a more stylish and technologically advanced option than this now-defunct Rolex model.

A brief look back at the Submariner’s evolution

Though it has since become one of the most sought-after luxury watches in existence, the Rolex Submariner didn’t have the most straightforward launch, and went through many references before the manufacturer eventually settled on the distinct characteristics we know and love today.

1953: Rolex unveiled the Submariner at the Basel Watch Fair. The initial models were reference 6204 and 6205. As mentioned, both featured a water resistance of up to 100 metres (330 feet).

1954: The Submariner 6200 model was introduced, featuring the now-famous Mercedes hands and an increased water resistance of 200 metres.

1960s: The Submariner 5513 and 5512 models hit the market. These iterations included a chronometer-certified movement in the 5512 and non-chronometer in the 5513. This decade also saw the addition of crown guards to protect the winding mechanism.

1967: The first Submariner Date model (1680) was introduced, featuring the Cyclops magnifying lens, which magnifies the date by precisely 2.5 times for better visibility.

1979: This year saw the introduction of the 16800 model with a sapphire crystal, which was incorporated into the design to improve scratch resistance. At this point, engineers also increased the water resistance of the Submariner to 300 metres.

1989: The 16610 model was introduced, featuring an upgraded movement, the calibre 3135, known for the robustness and precision it can achieve thanks to its in-house automatic movement with no less than 31 jewels.

2003: In the early noughties, the 50th Anniversary edition was released (16610LV), featuring a green bezel insert, marking a departure from the traditional black bezel.

2010: The modern Submariner Date models (116610LN) were unleashed globally, featuring a ceramic bezel insert (Cerachrom) and providing superior scratch resistance and a perpetual shine.

2020: Rolex updated the Submariner line with new models (e.g., 126610LN for the Submariner Date) featuring a slightly larger 41mm case and updated movements (calibre 3235 for the Date model).

Are Rolex Submariners a good investment?

Aside from its status within the diving community, the Submariner its a beautiful, reliable, and consistently innovative model that continues to be in demand amongst Rolex enthusiasts more than 60 years after it was created.

Naturally, there is an element of prestige to owning any Rolex watch. When you purchase a Rolex model – whether it’s a Submariner or not – you are buying into the meticulous attention to detail that has gone into the timepiece’s design; the engineering excellence that ensures the highest standards of accuracy; and the sheer quality and prestige of such a high-end item. Because it is also a functional diving tool with a purpose outside of simply being a status symbol, the Submariner is a practical and enduring choice for any Rolex watch collector.

Items with such a formidable reputation do come with a higher price tag. But this is testament to the quality of the investment! Just take care to protect the watch from damage, particularly when underwater.

How to look after your Rolex Submariner

If you’re lucky enough to own a Rolex Submariner, you’ll need to take steps to keep it in excellent working condition. It’s the only way to preserve its value.

Good maintenance comes down to organising Rolex watch repairs where components are not performing as they should. You should also arrange a full Rolex service for your Submariner at least every 4 or 5 years (depending on wear) to keep it free from dirt, grime and external or internal damage. Find out how to correctly look after a Rolex watch here and discover why it’s important to partner with Rolex restoration specialists who have been trained and authorised by the manufacturer themselves.

Rolex Submariner battery replacements will need to be considered every few years. If the watch’s mechanics are worn or not working at their best, this could shorten the battery life further.
